Soccer
Background
Soccer is the largest participation sport in Canada. In British Columbia alone soccer has approximately 110,000 youth participants. Developing these youth players is the key to the success of soccer in BC and in Canada.
Athlete Development
The BC Soccer Association (BCSA) is proud to announce the format for U12 Youth Development. U12 Boys and Girls soccer players will be brought together to compete at the BC Summer Games in the Super 8s format. This tournament will be an introductory showcase event for the Provincial Sports Model and the British Columbia Soccer Association U12 small-sided game Super 8’s soccer program.
This format allows for successful skill development by providing players with more chances to touch the ball. The smaller number of players combined with the smaller field size lends itself to more direct contact with the ball, resulting in better technical development.
The BC Summer Games is a vital step in the development of those soccer players wanting to advance to the next level by participation in the BCSA Player Development Programs. Every player participating in the BC Summer Games will have the opportunity to display his or her talent. Players can expect to be assessed during their games by Youth District Coaches that are involved in the Player Development Program.
Referees
The BC Summer Games also allow the BCSA Referee Development Program to bring together some of our brightest youth soccer referees from around our province. Selection will be based on their merit and ambition to progress up the recognized referee development schedule. All of the referees will receive game assessments, which will provide helpful guidance for improving their skills.
Team Officials
A mandatory minimum level of “Community Coach Senior Certification” will be required for the Zone Team Coaches. This will ensure that all soccer players receive an experienced, well-rounded coach that has met the criteria for coaching development.
