Boccia

Background
Boccia was developed specifically for athletes with severe physical impairments and has been a part of the Paralympic program for several years.  This adapted form of bocce is played indoors on a court with a referee.  Each end is timed.  At the elite level there are four sport classes and four disciplines - Individual, Team, Pairs and BC4 Pairs.

Competition at the Games
Athletes participating in the BC Games are regional level athletes ranging from 13 - 35 years of age.  A classification system unique to Paralympic sports places the athletes in categories or sport classes, which group athletes with a similar range of ability for competition.

Athlete Development
BC Summer Games is part of the continuum of competition that leads to the national team and the Paralympic games.  This is a unique opportunity for athletes with a severe physical impairment to gain experience travelling, staying away from home and developing independence.  It provides provincial coaches with the opportunity to meet and observe the up and coming athletes from around the province and regional coaches the opportunity to mentor with the higher level coaches.  In addition, the referees training program allows beginning and regional athletes the opportunity to work with the national referees to gain much needed experience.
