Corrine Badry’s passion for travel is truly being realized this year.
The 34-year-old Fort St. John woman was in Langley this weekend, where she scooped up a silver medal in the new boccia competitions at the BC Summer Games.
She just returned from Montreal last month, is off to London, Ont. soon, and will be back in the Lower Mainland in September.
All this travelling is directly attributed to this little woman’s great abilities with a pebble-filled leather ball – namely, the sport of boccia.
“I thought travel would be cool,” Badry said Saturday, before heading into the finals in the two-day round-robin competition.
Badry plays level BC3, where people with very severe motor function play with the aid of an assistant and a chute or ramp to deliver their balls closest to the jack.
In Badry’s case, she was defeated by Alison Kabush, who was a favourite going into the weekend. Ironically, Badry said, she doesn’t feel bad about losing to Kabush, since the two women are often teammates when competing in pairs competitions at the national level.
Badry did win several games this weekend, which allowed her to beat out another friend, and fellow Fort St. John resident, Alicia Calder.
Calder, who ultimately took bronze at the BC Summer Games, is the person responsible for bringing Badry into the sport some 15 years ago.
It didn’t take long for Badry to get hooked.
“It gives me something I like to do because I like to compete,” Badry said. “It takes a lot of strategy and makes my mind work.”
Now practicing 10 hours a week minimum at the local rec centre and gym, Badry is hoping the sport will continue open up more travelling opportunities for her.
