Victoria swimmer Ian Schoeddert brought his team to victory in the 400-metre medley on the final day of the Langley Township 2010 BC Summer Games. The boys originally came in second but after careful deliberation the first team was disqualified, clearing the path to gold for Schoeddert and his teammates.
“It was more of a team effort than anything else,” Schoeddert said.
Swimming the backstroke leg of the race, the 13-year-old said he was happy to be a part of his team.
“It was more fun than sheer competition.
“This whole experience has been a good one,” he added.
This is his first year participating in the Games, and Schoeddert said he appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the competition.
But competition wasn’t his focus: “It was more for the aspect of fun, I would say.”
Still, he said his team came together to strive for the win.
When a friend from his hometown of Calgary suggested he start swimming, Schoeddert decided to give it a try.
“He said it would be fun.”
But the gold medal hanging around his neck was testament to a lot of hard work as well.
